Value in Bible Stories

August 22, 2017

To make an impact on someone else requires something of you.  There is no shortcut for genuine love.  To be able to impact lives we must make an effort to love well.

One of my favorite events of the year is VBS.  I recently had the opportunity to ask one of our church members about her rotation that she taught.  Mrs. Linda McCord was in charge of our Bible Story rotation of Vacation Bible School and she shared some insight into her heart for God's Word.

CR: How long have you been a member of Pleasant Home Baptist Church?

LM: About 48 years.

CR: What is your favorite Bible story and why?

LM: My favorite Bible story would have to be from Acts 2, after Jesus has returned to heaven and given the disciples the Great Commission.  Soon after Peter preaches his first sermon. Peter tells the people that Jesus truly is the Messiah.  The Jews had hung him on the cross.  Peter may have denied the Lord, but he was truly changed when Jesus told him to feed His sheep!

CR: What made you want to teach Bible stories at VBS?

LM: I know that VBS is the greatest evangelistic tool we have to share the gospel.  Many children will come to VBS that will not be in Sunday School or Church.  I love the Bible and enjoy sharing it with the kids.

CR: How long does it take you to read over and prepare each Bible lesson?

LM: I read over all the lessons the first few days after receiving the material.  Then each day I’d spend about 2 hours making preparation for each day’s lesson.  The week of Vacation Bible School I would study and make more plans for the lesson for that particular day.

CR: What makes you so passionate about God’s Word?

LM: Growing up in Sunday School and the Training Union at Edon Baptist Church as a young person, I had teachers that love the Lord.  They taught us to learn Bible Verses and to read God’s Word daily.  We always marked Daily Bible Readings on our cards.

Throughout the week at VBS various workers mentioned how simply amazing the Bible Story rotation was.  Eventually, I had the opportunity to listen in on Mrs. McCord’s lesson as she told the story leading up to the death and resurrection of Jesus.  With a room full of 3rd graders she presented the hope of the gospel to this crowd of kids whose eyes were locked onto Mrs. McCord.

It didn’t take long to realize that there was much time and effort put into making these Bible stories come to life.  Years of knowledge combined with diligent study brought out an incredible display of God’s Word to groups of kids who normally can not stay still for more than two minutes.

As a young pastor, it is a beautiful sight to see that age is not a restriction to impact children.  Hard work will always have results whether we see it immediately or not.  I hope that my generation can look up to the wisdom of women such as Mrs. Linda McCord and become passionate about learning and studying God’s Word.

Wisdom cries aloud in the street,

in the markets she raises her voice;

at the head of the noisy streets she cries out;

at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

“How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?

How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing

and fools hate knowledge?

If you turn at my reproof,

behold, I will pour out my spirit to you;

I will make my words known to you.

-Proverbs 1:20-23

Pleasant Home Baptist Church holds an annual Vacation Bible School each year to reach out to the children surrounding their community with the love and compassion of Jesus Christ.  Be sure to check back with us at PHBC to be part of this amazing week in 2018!
