Nothing is really assured in our lifetime. You are never assured a child. You are never assured a good score. You are never assured tomorrow.
Biblically you are never assured a nice enough home or a nice enough car that will meet your expectations. Life in this age does not give us much assurance in what we think we need. In turn, we are anxious and stressed over what life is going to punch us with next. We put our belongings on insurance to save us from the unknown, but assurance is still hard to grasp. It seems so dim.
When we see the lack of certainty in life we can often look at our eternity and become fearful of how assured we can be. How are we really going to accomplish victory over this life that is pulling us down?
John writes in Revelation 12:7-12
Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”
- Revelation 12:7-12
Two important facts come out of this text relating to how Satan is conquered:
1) The blood of the Lamb
2) The testimony we give toward the blood of the Lamb
Often times apocalyptic literature is dualistic, meaning there is dark vs. light and evil vs. good. But throughout the book of Revelation we see a sad story unfold for what is dark and evil. The darkness is constantly being obliterated no matter what method is used to try and overpower God.
In the instance recorded by John we see Michael, an archangel, fighting against the dragon and his angels and sending them down to earth. The heroic announcement boasts about the made this victory possible. It is possible due to the victory that God has in His son, Jesus Christ. The blood that He shed conquered and in turn we see that very same blood is what the martyrs testified about, furthering the impact of the sacrifice of Jesus. This is how Satan was conquered.
Today, what power do you have to rest in? The blood of the Lamb. Satan is fought back when we live in response to this blood. The sacrifice that He has made for your sins, it is assured. The sins that He has killed with His blood can also destroy the sins of your co-worker, neighbor, parents, or spouse. Your life can be a constant testimony of the blood’s redemptive power. How will you point others toward its power today?
