Mark Chapters 2&3 Sermon Manuscript

(INTRO)

Mark 2&3 Main Points

  1. Jesus has power over sin.(vs1-12)

  2. Jesus came to save the sick, not the well.(vs13-17)

  3. New hope is to be put in a new container.(vs18-22)

  4. Jesus cared about man more than He cared about ritual.  In turn the religious tried to kill Him(vs2:23-3:6)

  5. Need lead Jesus to recruit leaders and the leaders had jobs to do.(vs7-21)

  6. Jesus is forced to refute the claim that He is a demonic leader.(vs22-30)

  7. Blood does not make up the family of God.(vs31-35)

 

Jesus has power over sin.(vs1-12)

 

As I continue to read through the gospel of Mark, this story in particular carries tremendous weight.

  • As we have stated up to this point, we understand that Mark is trying to explain to us the power that Jesus has.  The authority that is in the Son of the living God.

  • We have seen that John called mankind to repent, turn to God and not sin.

    • This idea is familiar with Jews throughout the OT prophets.

 

Jesus has already stated that mankind needs to believe in His gospel.  Now we see the result of what happens when we have faith in the power of Jesus.

  • Vs5, Jesus sees their faith, that these men have in the power of Jesus. 

  • Jesus has healed a lot of people up until this point but the faith of these men leads Jesus to say something completely different in the following verse, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

  • This is the nuclear warhead of Jesus’s ministry.  I can forgive your sin.

    • He didn’t tell people to repent and then God would bless them.

    • No, their faith in Him ultimately lead them to have their sins forgiven.

      • So what is the problem with this?  The Pharisee’s let us know.

“Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

  • Here is where I reinforce the truth that Jesus is God.

  • You see, the Pharisee’s were right and wrong at the same time.

    • God is the only one who can forgive sins, and Jesus was God in flesh.

    • The problem was that they couldn’t see that Jesus was God in flesh.

  • Christians, Jesus is God.  There is too much Scripture speaking into this truth to say otherwise.

 

Perceiving their hearts, Jesus explains to us why He does miracles.

  • Is it easier to do a miracle on the body or upon the soul?  Jesus did a miracle upon the body to prove what He can do upon mans soul. 

  • Jesus can forgive sins.

  • I want you to desperately believe that.

  • Sin is heavy.  It is a drag down and horrendous liar to us.  It hurts our families.  It rips apart churches. 

    • Listen, Jesus can forgive sins.

    • He has, He is, and He will continue to do so as long as man will have faith in the work of Jesus.

 

Jesus has the power over your sins.  He can destroy it.  He can forgive it.  Do you believe it?

 

Jesus came to save the sick, not the well.(vs13-17)

 

One of the most believed statements of the average Christian, yet the least exercised out of any Christian.

  • Jesus not only enlist fishermen, normal people, but He enlists the ones that society has rejected.

  • This is something the scribes can not wrap their mind around.  Why would you associate, do life, share a table, be friends, or hang around sinners.

    • This brings us to a very interesting place as Christians that we are all constantly trying to figure out.

      • How much am I suppose to be around people who are not Jesus people, and how much am I suppose to hang around Jesus people?

      • How much of the world am I suppose to be apart of?  How much of it am I suppose to reject?

 

Here are the verses that seemingly pull us different directions.

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” -1Jhn 2:15

“You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” -James 4:4

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” –Jhn 3:16

Whenever you go through the bible and read all of the New Testament usage of the word “world” you get a place that is loved by God so that He can save people from it and it is a place where Christians are suppose to dwell but not love.

  • So how are we to model God’s love for the world while not being a participant in the wrongdoing of the world?  What does that look like?  Tangible?

    • It looks like a Christian who takes a job at a restaurant and is surrounded by people who are in a constant sin.  People who are getting drunk, gossiping and backstabbing, sexual impurity, being jerks, being sloppy workers, laziness, and spewing hatred; and in the midst of this environment said Christian lives honestly, works diligently, does life with compassion, and loves these people without engaging in sin themselves.

    • For a lot of Christians who don’t have a mindset to win lost people to JESUS, they are put in this type of situation and normally do two things.

      • Become molded into the environment of sin that they are apart of. (this “Christian” is often not found in church and filled with a spiritual regret for not being strong.)

      • They are fearful of their holiness that they retreat to monkism, where they only live life around Christian’s with likeminded monkism so that they do not have to persevere through darkness to win the loss. (this Christian is in church and has no friends around him who are in need of a Savior that he/she can impact.)

    • Neither of these “Christians” are being faithful to the work of Jesus.

      • Jesus didn’t give into sin, but he also didn’t shut himself off from the world of sin.  He brought a light to the darkness!

 

So many times we call the church a hospital.  I agree with this imagery how we as Christians are suppose to bring people into healing and renewal for sick people.

  • This idea comes straight from the model that Jesus gives us here.  He is here for sick people, not those who are well.

    • Yet I think the Western church is has made church predominately about the well.

 

The hospital needs more patients.  But are we really ready and willing and desiring for sinners, people with different morals, political views, different clothes, different goals in life, different worldviews, different children, to come and be in our midst and be healed by God?

  • It is going to require a lot of nurses and doctors to get to work.

  • Maybe sick people are not coming to the hospital because that requires the nurses and the doctors to work… To learn, study, love, interact, and treat sick people who are not well.

New hope is to be put in a new container.(vs18-22)

 

This analogy that Jesus uses relating to fasting has caused a lot of confusion and misunderstanding. 

  • Vs19-20 give us the way in which Jesus’s present ministry on earth leads his disciples to not fast mainly because the presents of the Messiah bringing about love and salvation to the world is a thing to celebrate.

  • but then vs21-22 show us that the method, religious nature of the Judaism of the day is not a compatible with the work of Jesus Christ.

    • Some would venture to say that this is an out with the old and in with the new statement relating to the entirety of the Old Testament.  This doesn’t seem to work as Jesus is the fulfillment.

    • The problem must then mean that the exterior of the Judaism that had been created around Judaism was the old wineskins and the old garments that were not compatible with the mission that Jesus had to save sinners.

 

Today we have to look at our self and the church and ask the question.  Have I developed my life and the life of the church to the point where Jesus would consider me/us, old wineskins?  A group who is has become so brittle, so old that the good news cannot be poured upon it.

  • Each generation of Christians must evaluate themselves and answer this question on the state of their ministry.  Can the new wine that Jesus brings be poured into a new wineskin that can be useful and embraced  sinners or is it to brittle?

  • The Pharisees missed it.  Have I?  Have you?  Have we?

Jesus cared about man more than He cared about ritual.  In turn the religious rulers schemed to kill Him.(vs2:23-3:6)

 

Now this is not a morally okay thing it is to proclaim a point. 

  • If you want to make a family or close friend mad, make fun of their traditions and show them how pointless they are.

  • You might know of a family that has one of these (wake winch picture).  And they go to the river and get pulled behind it for fun whenever they can.  It is like something that is super fun for them.

    • But you say, “hey that is lame and no cool person does that.”

    • I am automatically upset.  Right.  This is what I enjoy doing for fun.

 

The scribes and Pharisees also had something that they enjoyed, keeping up with religious traditions.  Jesus comes into their realm and states:  “Hey, what you are doing is pointless, secondary, your mission the love of God, you don’t care about people and are hindering the honest worship of God.”

  • Do you think that the Pharisees are going to be happy over this?  NO.  But the truth still stands.

  • Tradition was more valuable than souls.  Doing X was more important that proclaiming the excellences of God.

    • What traditions do you, the church, or other place in the way of ministering to people?

    • What rules do we have that proclaim a “proper” way to love, worship, or be on mission for the glory of Jesus?

      • God wants to maximize the impact that He has upon sinners seeing His worth not religious people getting their way.

 

In turn the religious try to destroy.  The religious saw an infringement upon what they preferred with their traditions that they had built up from God’s Word that wasn’t primary and in turn they schemed to kill Jesus.

 

Need lead Jesus to recruit leaders and the leaders had jobs to do.(vs7-21)

 

Jesus, three chapters into a 16 chapter book has already moved to select leaders that have been following His example for 2 chapters.

  • Jesus understood something that I personally take for granted often.  The more who lead, the more impact you make.

    • There is stories of ancient armies who conquered enemies twice their number because of leadership.

    • Jesus saw the need to implement His heart, His mindset, His goals into his followers.

 

Here is something that I want to present to you as well.  For those of you who love Jesus and are doing ministry, leading in whatever role you may play, who are you training by your example to take your place.

  • Can you work yourself out of the current job Jesus has given to you so that you can continue to make an impact?

  • From the food ministry to the soundboard from our outreach to Sunday Service we have to be people who train leaders who can do ministry.

  • This is essential in the progression of Christianity.

    • Question is, what is Jesus calling you to do?

 

Jesus is forced to refute the claim that He is a demonic leader.(vs22-30)

 

So now that the Scribes and Pharisees wish to destroy Jesus they must develop a way to do so.  The first method of attack for the teachers of the Law is to play of Jesus’s authority and use this against Jesus.

  • So Jesus is casting out demons?  The only reason He has the power to be able to is because Jesus is the leader of the demons and can command them as He pleases.

    • This is a smarter strategy then we give the Scribes credit.

    • You want to topple leadership? Discredit reputation and authority that they have.

      • The Pharisees are trying to get a scandal started!

 

So what is the response of Jesus?

  • Simple scale of authority.

    • If Belzeebub, a lesser demonic being that is ruler of a demonic cult, was rebelling against Satan that this evil, spiritual kingdom could not stand.

    • What does this tell us about the demonic realm?  It is unified.  It is a force that is tightly knit and in a willful and obedient to the leaders within this kingdom.

      • If this isn’t a call to be unified then I don’t know what is.  I don’t want to enter eternity to find out that Satan’s kingdom was more unified than my church.

      • I wonder if Satan’s demons only do what they like and prefer in the demonic order, or if they follow the strategy and vision of Satan?

      • Demons understand how to be unified and to follow leadership.  Jesus knows this.

 

In response to the religious elite we see Jesus say a statement that has cause much concern for the spiritually concerned individual.

  • Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit “is guilty of an eternal sin.”

  • Many people have been concerned about what this “sin” is and what it means for each of us.

  • So I want to give you the clear understanding of what exactly this “eternal sin” is within the flow of the text.

    • Highly likely Jesus is referring to the scribes and Pharisees.

    • One of today’s theologians states this: “The unpardonable sin is to knowingly, willingly, and persistently attribute to Satan the works of God done by and in Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit, who testifies to these truths in your heart.”

    • Another theologian from back in the day states: “By assigning he action of God to a demonic origin the scribes betray a perversion of spirit which, in defiance of truth, chooses to call light darkness.”

 

So how do we transfer this principle in today’s world?

  • If you can see what happened last Sunday.

    • The spiritual leading of man to come and give their lives to Jesus, to be redeemed by Jesus, to celebrate this through baptism new life, and see others commit their lives to the service of Jesus Christ

      • If you are a religious person who knows the Word of God and contemplate within yourself and conclude that these acts, which are grounded in the Holy Spirit, were the work of Satan. Then it would be no stretch for me to say that you have committed this grave sin against the Spirit of God.

      • My prayer is that we will not be such a people who look down on the works of Jesus through the church because we could be on a dangerous track when we do.

      • It is one thing to say that something is ineffective, it is another to say that it is demonic.

 

Blood does not make up the family of God.(vs31-35)

 

As we arrive at the end of this passage we are dealing with Jesus’s ministry and His family.

  • His family has recently called Him crazy. (vs21)

  • Now they are trying to call him to straighten Him out.(vs31-32)

 

Something very sobering was stated in view of this. “Whoever does the will of God he is my brother and sister and mother.”

  • Those who follow me are my family.

  • Genetics does not make you a Christian. If certain people are followers of Jesus in your family, that spiritual obedience does not transfer into your spiritual account.

    • I hear that sometimes by Christians.

      • Asking very direct spiritual questions to someone and immediately they revert to someone they know.  “Oh my brother or son, he is a missionary or pastor in ____________,”  This is the explanation for their spiritual lifestyle.  It is grounded in another person.

      • This isn’t to say that other people in your life can make an impact upon you but being apart of the family of God is not about genetics but of your personal commitment to follow after Jesus.

(CONCLUSION)

So out of these chapters what is the biggest most important part in understanding Jesus?

  • Jesus not only cast out demons and heals the sick but cast out sins and heals souls of sinners.

  • Want to hear some good news? Jesus is here for sinners.  Not the ones who think or makes it look like they got it together but the ones who look at themselves and say, “Man, I need help.  The sins and wrong are not completing me.  I need help.”

    • Jesus has the power to tell a lame man to walk, and he did it.  But he can do something even greater today.  He can tell man or woman who is dead in their sin, “Your sins are forgiven.”  Is your complete soul desireing faith put into Jesus.  Do you know Him?  Do you know His power?  You can today, come talk to me.  Sin does not have to reign in your life.
